New Diplomas

Seventeen 14-19 Diplomas are being introduced in stages from September 2008,

so you may shortly see young people coming into employment with these diplomas, which will be particularly aligned to Apprenticeships.

The content of the diplomas has very much been set by employers, who have had a huge involvement in their development, through Sector Skills Councils.

Diplomas offer a new way of learning. They will be offered by partnerships of schools, colleges, work based learning providers and employers.

Young people taking diplomas will not spend all of their time sitting in a classroom- they will take courses at school or college and work with employers.

Diplomas will be available at 4 levels

  • Foundation - comparable to 4-5 GCSEs at Grades D-G
  • Higher - comparable to 5-6 GCSEs at Grades A*-C
  • Progression- comparable to 2 A levels
  • Advanced - comparable to 3 A levels

 

Five Diplomas are to be introduced from September 2008

  • Construction & the Built Environment 
  • Creative & Media 
  • Society, Health & Development 
  • Information Technology 
  • Engineering

 

A further five will be introduced from September 2009

  • Environmental & Land Based Studies 
  • Manufacturing 
  • Hair & Beauty 
  • Business Administration & Finance 
  • Hospitality & Catering

And four more from September 2010 

  • Public Service 
  • Sport & Leisure 
  • Retail 
  • Travel & Tourism

Finally, three more stand alone Diplomas are planned from September 2011 

  • Science 
  • Humanities 
  • Languages

From September 2013,

all 14-19 year olds will be able to study for any diploma at an appropriate level.

students will do a minimum of 10 days’ work experience.

They will also get the chance to learn with, and be mentored by, professionals working in their chosen field.
